River Oaks Llamas begin in 1989 with the purchase of our first two llamas, Baxter and Troy. Since then, our love for these intelligent and perceptive creatures has only grown with every passing year. From those modest beginnings fifteen years ago, we have grown greatly and it is now our pleasure to care for herd of over sixty-five llamas. At River Oaks we delight in getting to each new llama no matter how many llamas we care for.

River Oaks Ranch is a special place. Just one visit and you’ll understand how exceptional our ranch is. Nestled in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, our 146 acres of rolling fields, live oaks, creeks and a scenic lake nurture our beloved herd, providing them with a wonderful environment in which to thrive.

We take great care with our llamas, making sure we only give them the best. Llamas are not jumpers and do not damage fencing as horses and cattle do, so we can entirely avoid barbed wire. Instead, pipe fencing separates herd sires from the herd and controls breeding, while only field fencing and wood posts enclose catch pen areas. Our llamas require minimum restraint. We also provide three-sided shelters for our herd in severe weather, though most of the herd prefers the open field even in the harshest conditions. In all conditions, we make coastal hay available even when field grasses are abundant.

What truly makes our ranch special, however, is that we appreciate the uniqueness of each and every individual in our herd. Please read on and discover why our Llamas are so special.
